The Virgin Mobile established its operations as a mobile virtual network operator in 1999. Virgin Mobile is a brand used by various mobile phone service providers operating in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, South Africa, United States and France. The Virgin Group provides the brand and the phone company operates the network substructure. Virgin Mobile started life as a joint adventure between Virgin and T-Mobile. Then Virgin purchased from T-Mobile, all of the shares that T-Mobile owned in Virgin Mobile.

In the UK, Virgin Mobile operates the T-Mobile network. In Australia, Virgin Mobile uses on the Optus network. In Canada, it uses the Bell Mobility. In France, it uses Orange SA. Virgin Mobile South Africa operates the Cell C network. These networks use 2 different mobile telephony standards like GSM and CDMA. GSM technology is used in the UK, Australia, South Africa and France. CDMA technology is used in the US and Canada. In all countries Virgin Mobile Provider provides prepaid pay service. In the UK, US, Australia and South Africa Virgin Mobile also offer a "pay monthly" option.

Virgin Mobile offer a liberal range of mobile communications products and services including mobile voice and non-voice services. The Virgin Mobile also provides SMS, MMS, 3G, and entertainment services including games, information and music services and international roaming. Virgin Mobile UK is a Cell Phones service provider operating in the United Kingdom. It is a auxiliary of Virgin Media. It does not maintain its own network and instead has contracts to use the existing network of T-Mobile. The completion of this deal creates the first UK company able to offer a ‘quadruple play’ to users. This company will be able to offer mobile and fixed line telephony, broadband internet and television, putting it in an unrivalled position in the communications industry.

In this year Virgin Mobile expanded Virgin Fest to include 2 events. Virgin Mobile is featured in 'The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For’ list 2005 and is part of the FTSE4Good Index. Virgin Mobile Australia was founded in 2000 as a 50/50 business partnership between Virgin Mobile and Optus. VMA were Australia's first Mobile Virtual Network Operator.
